New Technology May Help Offset Cancer Screening Costs

1According to the American Cancer Society,

women should start receiving regular mammograms after age 45. Mammograms, which use x-ray technology to detect breast cancer in patients by collecting data from the breast tissue and searching for any abnormalities or growths, can be an expensive procedure in addition to the physical discomfort it may bring.

Many doctors and hospitals have begun offering 3-D mammograms (also known as , or DBT), which use 3-demensional technology in lieu of x-ray to find these abnormalities. The process itself is more expensive, however a new study by a team of researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has found that the newer technology could offset other expenses post-screening and ultimately make the treatment process for breast cancer much cheaper on the patient.
