Through recessions, technological change 
and global political upheaval there has been an immutable truth. The sports industry will rise, and keep on rising. This notion could soon be shattered. The rate of revenue growth in sport is declining, according to PwC’s Sports Survey 2017. Sports industry leaders, ranging from federations to clubs and broadcasters, expect growth to slow from 8 per cent, over the last three-to-five years, to 6.4 per cent per year over the next three-to-five. It could just be the start of a sports slowdown. Corruption, from athletes and administrators alike, has eroded trust in sport and put some fans off. But the most fundamental problem is that sports are struggling to adjust to young people’s changing tastes. Sports’ preoccupation with the “pace of play” in recent years – baseball, basketball, golf and American football are among those who have tinkered with the rules to make matches quicker, while rugby sevens and T20 cricket are surging in popularity – is a reflection of how games are trying to adapt for the attention-deficit age.
